Director - Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (PGIHS) is a national institute established under the University of Peradeniya to provide, promote, and develop higher education in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Sri Lanka. PGIHS invites applications from confirmed members of the academic staff of the University of Peradeniya for the post of Director in accordance with UGC Commission Circular No. 01/2024.

Position Summary

• Role: Director

• Institution: Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (PGIHS), University of Peradeniya

• Location: Peradeniya, Sri Lanka

• Appointment Term: Full-time officer for a period of three (03) years or until reaching 65 years of age, whichever occurs earlier.

• Role Scope: Serves as the Principal Executive Officer, Principal Academic Officer, Accounting Officer, and Chairperson of the Board of Management.

Key Responsibilities & Leadership Role

• Provide visionary academic leadership and direct the expansion of postgraduate education, research portfolios, and demand-driven multidisciplinary programmes.

• Foster active engagement in research, community outreach, and institutional development in alignment with the Institute’s Corporate Plan.

• Build and maintain effective working relationships with other university units, national bodies, and international institutions.

• Oversee the overall administrative, financial, and academic operations of the Institute as its Chief Executive and Accounting Officer.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

Citizenship & Age

• Citizenship: Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.

• Age Limit: Must be below 63 years of age as of the closing date for applications.

• Staff Status: Must be a confirmed member of the academic staff of the University of Peradeniya.

Academic & Professional Background

• Applicants should possess strong postgraduate qualifications, preferably a PhD, together with relevant administrative and management experience.

• Must demonstrate an outstanding record in research, strong interpersonal skills for a multidisciplinary academic environment, and a clear vision for institutional growth.

Remuneration & Benefits

• Entitled to the salary and other allowances applicable to the post of Director as prescribed by UGC regulations.

Selection Procedure

• Selections will be conducted in accordance with the procedures outlined in UGC Commission Circular No. 01/2024 dated 01st January 2024.
