Job Overview

The Department of Prisons in Sri Lanka is conducting an open competitive examination to recruit qualified Sri Lankan citizens for the position of Pharmacist / Dispenser (Grade III). This is a permanent, pensionable role subject to a three-year probationary period, requiring candidates to be physically and mentally fit to serve in any part of the island. The related examination will consist of an Intelligence Test and a Subject-specific General Knowledge paper, scheduled to be held in Colombo in December 2026.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

  • O/L Qualifications: Must have passed the G.C.E. (O/L) examination in six subjects in one sitting, including Credit passes for Sinhala or Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science, and one additional subject.
  • A/L Qualifications: Must have passed the G.C.E. (A/L) examination in the Science stream with three subjects, including Chemistry, in a single sitting (excluding the General Test).
  • Professional Certification: Must hold a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 06 Pharmacist/Dispenser training course certificate recognized by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. (Note: If there is a shortage of professionally qualified applicants, candidates meeting the educational requirements may be recruited as trainees for a one-year course conducted by the Ministry of Health).

Age and Physical Requirements

  • Age Limit: Candidates must be between 18 and 35 years of age as of the closing date, meaning they must be born on or between October 25, 1991, and October 25, 2008.
  • Physical Criteria (Male): Must have a minimum height of 5 feet 4 inches (162.5 cm) and an unexpanded chest measurement of 32 inches (81.25 cm).
  • Physical Criteria (Female): Must have a minimum height of 5 feet 2 inches (157.5 cm).
  • Character: Must possess a good moral character (verified via police clearance) and have no criminal convictions related to moral turpitude.

Salary Scale

  • Placed under the MT-2-2025 salary scale, candidates will receive a starting monthly basic salary of Rs. 50,630.
  • The complete salary progression is: Rs. 50,630 - 10 x 630 - 11 x 670 - 10 x 1,010 - 10 x 1,190 = Rs. 86,300.

How to Apply

  • Examination Fee: A non-refundable fee of Rs. 600 must be paid to any Bank of Ceylon branch, credited to the Commissioner General of Prisons Account No. 7041491 at the Borella Super Grade Branch.
  • Application Format: Applications must be manually completed or typed on both sides of A4-sized paper ($\sim 8.27 \times 11.69$ inches) precisely matching the specimen format provided in the gazette. The original bank receipt must be affixed to the specified spot on the application.
  • Submission Details: Send the duly completed application via registered post to reach on or before October 25, 2026.
  • Postal Address: Commissioner General of Prisons, Establishments Branch, Prisons Headquarters, No. 150, Baseline Road, Colombo 09.
  • Envelope Marking: The top left corner of the envelope must be clearly marked in the respective language medium as "Open Competitive Examination for Recruitment to the Post of Pharmacist of the Department of Prisons - 2026".
