The BSc (External) in Financial Engineering is a three-year external degree program (90 credits, SLQF Level 5) offered by the Department of Mathematics through the Open Distance Learning Centre (ODLC) of the Faculty of Science. The program focuses on developing financial strategies and tools to forecast financial trends, create financial models, and support strategic financial decision-making in businesses and organizations.

Basic Economics and Accounting
Quantitative Techniques and Quantitative Finance
Financial Modeling and Risk Management
Corporate Finance
Professional Development and Practices in Finance
Three passes at GCE Advanced Level (local) in one sitting in Mathematics/Biology/Commerce streams
OR
Equivalent qualifications such as Edexcel, London A/L, Cambridge A/L including Mathematics
OR
Any other equivalent academic or professional qualification acceptable to the faculty and senate
Sri Lankan students: LKR 200,000 per year
International students: USD 1,500 per year (20% discount for Sri Lankans from foreign territories)
Application fee: LKR 3,000
Note: Course fees are not payable in installments; however, local students may apply for a student loan from the Commercial Bank of Sri Lanka
Applications are invited annually, with the deadline for the 2026 intake in September 2025
The process includes submission of the application form and payment of the application fee
Shortlisted candidates are called for interviews in September
Final selection list is published in October
Registration occurs in November, with the program commencing in January of the following year
